Part-Time General Surgeon – Permanent W-2
South Dakota | Flexible Scheduling | Hospital Employed
A progressive, financially stable community hospital in South Dakota is seeking a Part-Time General Surgeon to join its team on a permanent, hospital-employed (W-2) basis. This position is designed to complement an existing General Surgeon and provide consistent surgical and call coverage.
This opportunity offers exceptional flexibility, modern facilities, and strong administrative support. Long-term locums coverage is not currently being considered.
Position Details
- Permanent, W-2 hospital employment
- Ideal schedule: 26 weeks per year
- Flexible coverage models available:
- 1 month at a time, or
- 2–4 weeks per quarter if the provider is not interested in 26 weeks/year
- Option for:
- Call-only coverage, or
- Call + elective cases and limited clinic (provider chooses days/hours)
- 24/7 General Surgery call
- 20-minute response time
- Catchment area: ~4.5 counties
- Typical OR day starts at 7:00 AM; most scheduled cases complete by noon
- After-hours call includes trauma and emergent cases
- Appys, scopes
- Simple orthopedic procedures (knee scopes, carpal tunnel)
- Occasional C-section assistance only for complex cases
(Family Practice physicians perform routine C-sections)
Practice Environment
- Medical staff includes:
- Family Practice physicians
- Internal Medicine physicians
- PAs, 4 NPs, and 1 Midwife
- Visiting specialists: Orthopedics, Podiatry, ENT, Pain Management
- 300 surgical cases in 2025
- Strong anesthesia support with experienced CRNAs
Compensation & Benefits
- $300,000–$315,000 for 26 weeks of coverage
- Prorated for fewer weeks
- Call-only roles considered near the $300K range
- $50,000 sign-on bonus (3-year commitment for 26-week schedule)
- Health & dental insurance: 100% of physician premium covered
- Retirement:
- 401(k) with up to 4% match
- 3% employer contribution even if physician does not participate
- 457 plan eligibility
- CME allowance: $6,500 annually (+ $1,000 carryover)
- Flexible use (apps, iPad, software, etc.)
- Relocation or annual travel stipend available
- Affordable housing options with temporary assistance if needed
Hospital leadership is highly supportive of physician-driven initiatives. Providers are encouraged to develop service lines aligned with their interests (e.g., procedural programs, wound care, specialty clinics).
Qualifications
- Board Eligible or Board Certified in General Surgery
(BE candidates must achieve certification within hospital-defined timeframe) - ATLS required (Level IV Trauma Center)
- BLS and ACLS required
